El Dorado has a history intertwined with gold. James W. Marshall discovered gold in Columa in January of 1884, and when this fact became known, the area was called El Dorado, a mythical reference to an Indian chief who discovered gold and precious stones during ancient rituals. El Dorado's county seat is Placerville and was created February of 1850.
