Calveras was created February 18, 1850. The county seat is San Andreas. The meaning of the word "calaveras" is "skulls." The banks of the Calaveras River were littered with skulls from the local Indian tribes due to famine or tribal conflicts. The earlier settlers simply began to refer to it as the calveras area.
