Nome, located on the Norton Sound of the Being Sea, is in the unorganized borough and is within the region of the Bering Straits Native Corporation. In 1899, a vote was held to change the name of Nome to Anvil City to avoid common confusion with Cape Nome, which is south of Nome on the Nome River. Although the majority voted to change the name, they were overruled by the US Post Office, and the city retained the name.
