In January 2011, voters in South Sudan elected to separate from Sudan; the results announced on February 7th indicated almost 99% support for this option.
President Omar al Bashir has accepted the result. A formal declaration of independence for Africa's newest country will be made on 9th July 2011, six years after the peace deal, which made the referendum possible, took effect.
