Officially registered as a breed in 1888, the Welsh Terrier originated in Wales and is considered one of the oldest breeds in the United Kingdom. This dog was originally known as an Old English Terrier or a Black and Tan Haired Terrier. (The Welsh Terrier's wire-haired coat is always black and tan.) A intelligent dog, the breed is known as a friendly, energetic and outgoing dog, particularly good with children.
