A member of the spaniel family, the Welsh Springer Spaniel was recognised as a breed in its own right in 1902, although historical references mention that a red and white spaniel existed many years prior to that. The defining characteristic is the red and white coat and the Welsh Springer Spaniel is generally accepted as a good family dog with a happy, active disposition. The life span of these dogs is between 15-17 years.
