Originating in Spain, the Spanish Water Dog earlier origins are unknown but some believe the dogs were taken to Spain either by early Turkish or Moorish traders. A versatile and intelligent animal, the Spanish Water Dog was kept for hunting, guarding and herding and is some parts of Spain is still used as a working dog to herd sheep and goats. In modern Spain the dogs are used in search and rescue. The United Kennel Club officially recognised the breed in 2004.
