Dachs means badger in German, and Hund means hound or dog. The Dachshund comes in three varieties: short-haired, wired-haired, and long-haired. Each of variety of Dachshund has three sizes: standard, and miniature (both recognized by the AKC) and toy (recognized in Europe, not in AKC).
