The history of the Egyptian Mau dates back over 4000 years to ancient Egypt. This breed was developed from the African Wild Cat and is believed to be the ancestor of all domestic cats. Mau means cat in Egyptian and since cats were considered to be nearly gods, cat killers of that time period were sentenced to death.
