Category Description:

Pediatric surgery (also spelled as paediatric surgery) is a surgical procedure or operation sub-specialty that deals with the surgery of children, adolescents, young adults, and even fetuses. It was established in the middle of the 20th Century in response to the need for special surgical care and treatment methods and techniques for birth defects.

Doctors who perform pediatric surgery (pediatric surgeons) are expected to have completed a general surgery residency and complete two years (or more depending on the country of training and certification) of sub-specialty fellowship training.

Neonatal surgery, fetal surgery, pediatric cardiothoracic surgery, pediatric nephrology, pediatric neurosurgery, and pediatric urological surgery are some of the sub-specialties under pediatric surgery. It addresses common pediatric conditions and diseases such as congenital malformations: lymphangioma, cleft lip and palate, pyloric stenosis, intestinal atresia, necrotizing enterocolitis, meconium plugs, Hirschsprung's disease, imperforate anus, undescended testes, childhood tumors, chest wall deformities, hernias, and conjoined twins.
