Amyloidosis is any of a group of different conditions where various proteins are deposited outside the cells. When they build up in a localized area, the condition causes relatively few symptoms. If the accumulation is widespread, it can involve and cause failure of multiple organs.
In addition to being localized or widespread, Amyloidosis may also be the primary condition or it may be secondary to other infectious, inflammatory, or malignant conditions.
Biopsy of the affected organ or tissue is required to diagnose these conditions. Treatment varies, depending on the type of Amyloidosis.
