Intranet refers to a private computer network that makes use of Internet Protocol technology to enable the sharing of information or network operating system within an organization. Differentiating the term from the Internet, intranet is the smaller system. If the Internet is a network between organizations, the intranet is a network within organization. Both share the similar information sharing functions and technologies used but they can be differentiated by their scope or scale. Moreover, it can be said that intranet can be a private extension of the Internet exclusive to a certain organization.
In order to serve its purpose, software and programs are developed to allow convenient and quick access and interfacing for users. Intranets may provide a gateway to the Internet through a network gateway with a firewall. Such network gateway would typically have with it user authentication, encryption, and virtual private network connectivity functions or implementations.
This category features a variety of software for running intranets as a tool for enhancing workforce productivity, communication, web publishing, business operations and management, collaboration, and cross-platform capability.
