Finnish composer of the late Romantic era; born in 1865, died in 1957, and played an important part in the development of Finland's national identity in the 1890s, particularly with his composition of Finlandia. Best known for his symphonies, Karelia Suite, and Lemminkäinen Suite (which includes The Swan of Tuonela).
