Born on February 13, 1942, Peter Halsten Thorkelson, better known as Peter Tork, is best known as a member of The Monkees. Early press releases in the 1960s gave the year of his birth as being 1944, and that error has persisted all these years later. Probably the most musical of the group, Peter studied piano, banjo, and guitar as a youngster, and while the others in the group did not play their own instruments on the first two albums, Peter did play on one song on the first album, "Papa Gene's Blues." Though he was portrayed as a lovable dimwit on the television show, he was extremely intelligent and literate, according to his co-Monkees.
