George Bernard Shaw was a novelist, playwright and essayist born in Dublin, Ireland in 1856. An ardent socialist, he was awarded the Nobel prize for literature in 1925 and wanted to refuse but was persuaded to accept by his wife who saw it as an honour for Ireland. One of his best known works was the play "Pygmalion" on which the musical "My Fair Lady" was based. He died in 1950.
