Columbus Day, which falls on the second Monday in October, has come under a great deal of controversy as, historically, Columbus wasn't the first to discover America, nor was he the first European to land on the continent. To the obverse, he was known for some fairly questionable practices concerning the abuse of native peoples. Washington Irving is largely responsible for the historic mix-up as his biography of Columbus wrongly embellished the account in what many claim was essentially a piece of dramatic fiction. Italian Americans began celebrating Columbus Day on October 12th in 1869, and Franklin Roosevelt made it a national holiday in 1937. In 1968, President Johnson changed the day to October 2nd and declared it a federal holiday.
