World Series, Witches and Wildfires

Florida Marlins defeat the New York Yankees at home to win the World Series. Marlins beat the Yankees 4 games to 2 in the six-game series. Marlin's Pitcher Josh Beckett is named the MVP.

Arnold Schwarzenegger beats Gray Davis and becomes governor of California in a highly-debated recall election. The muscular film star wins by a remarkably wide margin.

Columbus Day falls on the 13th this year, and it's a federal holiday. Look for banks, libraries and postal centers to be closed.

"Elf" is released to much success on October 9th. The film is directed by Jon Favreau and stars Will Ferrell, James Caan, Bob Newhart, Edward Asner, Mary Steenburgen, Andy Richter and Zooey Deschanel.

October 9th finds a car bomb killing eight people in a Baghdad police compound, and another bomb explodes on October 12th outside of the Baghdad Hotel, killing six and wounding dozens. The hotel is a known for supplying rooms to Americans and members of Iraqi's Governing Council.

On October 26th, bombs strike the Al-Rashid Hotel, which housed top-level American officials and other workers for coalition forces, and, on October 27th, four car bombs go off in Baghdad, which damage the Islamic branch of the Red Cross as well as three local police stations. 40 are killed and hundreds are injured. A fifth bombing was averted when a suspect was removed from a car containing explosives outside of another local police station.

China sends their first astronaut into orbit on October 15th. Lt. Col. Yang Liwei orbits the Earth several times in the Shenzhou V and returns safely, making China the third nation to send a man into space after the U.S. and Russia.

October 17th find Congress approving $billions for the military and reconstruction of Iraq and Afghanistan.

"The Matrix Revolutions" opens on October 27th, and it's the final segment of the popular science-fiction trilogy. It stars Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Laurence Fishburne, Jada Pinkett Smith, Helmut Bakaitis, Hugo Weaving, Monica Bellucci, Lambert Wilson and Mary Alice.n October 27th, President Bush declares California Wildfires a disaster. The outbreak of fires stretch from Los Angeles to Mexico and are fueled by the Santa Ana winds, dry brush and extremely high temperatures. However, some of the blazes are believed to have been started by arsonists.

A lead weapons hunter in Iraq, David Kay, Iraq Survey Group, tells congress that weapons of mass destruction have not been found in Iraq as of October 2nd, 2003.

Kids dressed as witches, ghosts, goblins and more will be on the prowl for Halloween candy on the 31st.
