On July 4th, 1776,
America claimed
independence from Britain
and democracy was born. Independence Day
marks the day when thirteen American colonies unanimously voted for the
adoption of the Declaration
of Independence. The Liberty Bell
was then rung to summon citizens for the first public reading of this document.
Each year thereafter, Americans have been getting together on the 4th of July
to celebrate their independence by attending outdoor picnics and barbeques,
while igniting fireworks to brighten the night sky. Most Americans will enjoy a three day weekend
with their friends and family. Children
will be reminded of historical figures like Thomas
Jefferson and John
Adams and their role after the Revolutionary
War.
