Memorial Day, which falls on May 31st this year, is looked upon by many as the beginning of summer, but the official start of the season doesn't arrive until June 21st. This won't stop millions of Americans from enjoying the tradition of firing up the barbecue with friends and family on the long holiday weekend.
Mother's Day is Sunday, May 9th, and offers a great opportunity to tell moms just how much we love them. Sons and daughters everywhere will be showering moms with cards, flowers, candy, gifts and more.
American troops keeping peace in Haiti after a revolt removed the president, finds their presence doubly needed when flooding hits the region, killing more than 1,700 in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
Hearings before the Senate and House Armed Services committees on May 7th, finds the secretary of defense apologizing to Iraqis who suffered torture at the hands of U.S. military personnel, and says a panel will look further into the abuse. As pressure increases for Rumsfeld to resign, President Bush offers his support to the secretary of defense, while claiming Rumsfeld had done a wonderful job and the nation owed him a debt of gratitude.
On May 18th, the leader of the Indian National Congress Party, Sonia Gandhi, states she will not become the nation's Premier. Former Finance Minister, Manmohan Singh, becomes the Premier.
On May 27th, the Surgeon General announces that, in addition to lung and larynx cancer and bronchitis, smoking can also cause cervical, kidney, pancreatic, and stomach cancer, in addition to other serious diseases, and a report in the Journal of the American Medical Association reveals that women who take aspirin once a day are 26% less likely to develop a certain kind of tumor than women who don't take aspirin.
May 29th finds nearly 200,000 people, including almost 100,000 veterans, in attendance at the opening of the National World War II Memorial in Washington, DC.
On a lighter note, racing fans enjoy the Indianapolis 500 race on May 30, which is won by Buddy Rice. Rice is a member of David Letterman's racing team (Rahal-Letterman Argent/Pioneer).
