May 29th marks the 50th anniversary of the first successful mountain climbing expedition to the top of the world's highest peak, Mount Everest. On May 29, 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first to climb to the top of Mount Everest and live to tell about it. Everest was first identified as the world's highest mountain in 1852 when the Great Trigonometric Survey of India revealed the truth about the mountain's altitude. Expeditions to the top of Everest began in 1921 when the kingdom of Tibet opened its borders. The famous "because it's there" quote was coined by George Mallory in 1924 when reporters asked why he wanted to climb Mount Everest. Mallory and his partner, Andrew Irvine, made three attempts to scale the peak, but the third mission took their lives. Mallory's body wasn't found until 1999, and no evidence, photographs, journals, etc., was found on the body to document if he'd made it to the top before succumbing to the elements. Hillary and Norgay did enjoy an advantage Mallory and Irvine did not: Hillary's party climbed the mountain from its Nepalese side, which had recently opened restrictions on foreigners, while Tibet's borders had recently closed after being invaded by China in 1950.
