The 2007-08 NBA season tips off on October 30 when the reigning champion San Antonio Spurs take on the Portland Trailblazers.
This match-up lost some of its luster when Blazer rookie Greg Oden suffered a season-ending knee injury. Nevertheless, the Spurs will be receiving their Championship rings, and any game featuring Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker will certainly be good basketball.
Also on the opening night schedule, the Utah Jazz meet the Golden State Warriors, who knocked the Dallas Mavericks out of the playoffs in the first round last season. In the final game, Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers will take on Yao Ming, Tracy McGrady and the Houston Rockets.
Though Kobe repeatedly stated (and then repeatedly recanted) that he wanted to be traded from Los Angeles this summer, he still wears the Laker uniform.
The contenders for the NBA title in 2008 are expected to be the Spurs, Mavericks and Phoenix Suns in the Western Conference, while the Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Pistons and Boston Celtics are favorites in the East. The Celtics picked up two huge acquisitions in the offseason in superstar forward Kevin Garnett and sharpshooter Ray Allen.
