After much speculation over the last few months about dealing away Kobe Bryant, the Los Angeles Lakers finally made a trade on Tuesday. However, this move didn’t involve the Lakers superstar. The team traded Brian Cook and Maurice Evans to the Orlando Magic for Trevor Ariza.

Trevor Ariza

Ariza, who is a native of Los Angeles, can provide the Lakers which some defense, length, and athleticism. Phil Jackson is hoping that the 22-year-old, 6-foot-8 small forward will be able to provide some defensive assistance to relieve Bryant against some of the bigger perimeter players in the NBA, such as Tracy McGrady. Though Ariza’s offensive arsenal is limited, he has shown incredible athleticism and has the tools to become a very good defender in the league.

The trade also offered the Lakers an opportunity to get rid Cook’s contract, which had three years and $10.5 million left on it. Cook is shooting only 19% from the field this season.

The Lakers currently have a record of 7-3 and have won four games straight. Right now, the Magic sit atop the Southeast Division with a record of 10-2.
