On Sunday, September 9th, the country will celebrate National Grandparents Day.
Back in 1970, a West Virginia housewife, Marian McQuade, initiated a campaign in her area to set aside a special day for grandparents. After her grassroots effort got the campaign rolling, soon it was picked up and expanded statewide.
In 1973, the first official Grandparents Day was proclaimed by West Virginia Governor Arch Moore.
Through the next few years, West Virginia senator Jennings Randolph, who had helped fuel the Grandparents Day campaign in West Virginia, introduced the resolution to the Senate.
In 1978, the U.S. Congress passed the legislation and the proclamation was signed by National Grandparents Day is a time for all to remember to love, respect and cherish our elders.
