Recycle Day

Today is America Recycles Day, the only nationally recognized day whose goal it is to educate and encourage Americans to recycle and use recycled goods. Currently in its eleventh year, the holiday is put together by the National Recycling Coalition and now includes millions of participants.

Volunteers will be positioned around the country today, organizing events in schools and municipalities that stress the importance of recycling their products and buying goods made with recycled paper, plastic, and glass.

If you’d like to get involved in promoting the social, environmental and economic benefits of recycling, you can spread the word or do a bit of your own recycling.

Here are a few tips:

  1. Do clean all your cans, bottles, and jars as much as possible. This makes them easier to process, thus keeping the cost of recycling down.
  2. Don’t recycle everything made with glass, metal, plastic, or paper. Accidentally adding non-recyclable products to the recycling bin ups costs.
  3. Do recycle electronics and large items. Most municipalities have a few days a year when they recycle old electronics, furniture and appliances. Call your recycling center for a list of those days.
  4. Don’t throw greasy pizza boxes, milk jug tops, and jar lids into your bins, as they most likely aren’t candidates for recycling.
  5. Do call your local recycling center to get the details on anything and everything that you can recycle.
