With all the partying happening in Las Vegas to ring in 2008, much attention was on New Year’s Eve was on a motorcycle jump.
Robbie Maddison rang in the New Year in style in the Rio All-Suite Casino and Hotel in Vegas. Maddison, a native of Australia, landed a successful motorcycle jump of just over 322.5 feet. The previous Guinness-certified record was 277.5 feet by Trigger Gumm, also of Australia.
After breaking the record, Maddison attempted a second jump. Although he landed that jump as well, he traveled only 320 feet. Maddison didn’t attempt a third jump after successfully landing his first two jumps.
According to a report, Maddison had a practice jump on Sunday night in which he jumped 350 feet. It’s uncertain whether that practice jump would be recognized by Guinness. A slight headwind was blamed for Maddison’s inability to reach the mark during his performance on Monday.
Asked about his goal in the future, Maddison pointed to the 400 foot mark.
“I know I’m definitely going to do it,” said Maddison, who also broke the uncertified record of 310.3 on Monday.
Maddison is from Kiama, Australia, a town south with a population of less than 20,000 situated south of Sydney.
