September 11, 2007 will mark the sixth anniversary of the 9-11 terrorist attacks on the United States.
On that morning in 2001, terrorists hijacked four commercial passenger airliners. The hijackers crashed two of the planes into the World Trade Center towers in New York City, resulting in the collapse of both buildings. The third airliner crashed into the Pentagon outside Washington, DC.
It is believed that passengers and crew members on the fourth aircraft, United Airlines Flight 93, attempted to confront and re-take control of the plane. The airliner crashed into a field in rural Pennsylvania.
2,974 people plus 19 hijackers died as a result of the attacks. Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda took responsibility for the attacks. Osama bin Laden is the founder of the organization.
The 9-11 Commission was formed in 2002 and issued the 9-11 Commision Report in July of 2004, which has been subject to criticism and controversy.
Now, six years after the attacks the United States remembers the victims, survivors and their families through a series of events and memorials across the country.
