Benazir BhuttoOn Thursday, Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in Rawalpindi, Pakistan after a rally of her political supporters. Bhutto, who was the first female elected to lead a Muslim state, was the former Prime Minister of Pakistan.

According to reports from the scene, Bhutto was standing through the sunroof of a vehicle when gunshots rang out. Bhutto was shot in the neck. Despite being rushed to Rawalpindi General Hospital, she was pronounced dead soon after the arrival.

After Bhutto was shot, there was also an explosion in the area. The explosion caused the casualties of over twenty more people at the scene. It’s believed that the person who shot Bhutto was also responsible for the bombing.

The country of Pakistan was understandably in shock over the death. Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said that it was the saddest day in the history of Pakistan. President Pervez Musharraf declared there will be a period of mourning that will last three days.

Bhutto, who was 54 years old, was served as Prime Minister in 1988 and 1996. Although charges of corruption led to her ouster both on both occasions, Bhutto has recently been hailed as a hero in the nation of Pakistan.

U.S. President George W. Bush said that those behind the attack must be brought to justice and that Bhutto was known as someone who fought the forces of terror.
