In a bit of a surprise, Helio Castroneves came out victorious in the “Dancing with the Stars” season finale. Castroneves, a race car driver from Brazil, and his dance cohort Julianne Hough beat out Spice Girl Melanie Brown and her partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy.
An Indy car driver, Castroneves is most known for his two Indianapolis 500 victories. But this title might be just as big for Castroneves, as “Dancing with the Stars” is currently the most watched television show in the United States.
The winners, who received a disco ball trophy, were determined by the judges on the show and votes from viewers. Last week, the number of viewers was estimated at around 23 million. This week, that number promises to be much higher.
Brown, also known as Scary Spice, was considered the favorite by many viewers heading into the season finale. However, Castroneves was able to wow judges and viewers alike with his final dance. Finishing third was Marie Osmond and her dance partner Jonathan Roberts.
This was the fifth season of “Dancing with the Stars” on ABC. Past winners include Olympic speedskater Apolo Anton Ohno and former NFL player Emmitt Smith.
