If you’ve ever seen that cute, geeky penguin making his way around the Internet, his name is Tux. You may not know it, but Tux is the mascot for Linux, the Other Operating System. Neither Windows nor Mac OSX, Linux is a unix-like computer operating system first created by Linus Torvalds. Best of all: it’s completely free. Open source software, like Linux, is software in which the source code is open and available to the general public to tweak, change, and improve as much as their abilities allow.
Through this group effort, a project as staggeringly large as Linux is able to exist and be distributed throughout the world. There are many Linux distributions, all with their own set of options and capabilities. Some are more user-friendly and require less tech know-how while others are best suited to those who know their way around an operating system. To find out which distribution could be right for you, check out the Linux.org section on distributions.
If Linux strikes your fancy, then the Linux World Expo is right up your alley. Geared toward both aficionados and newbies (beginners), the Linux World Expo covers topics such as applications, troubleshooting your system, Linux security, virtualization, and more. The 2007 Linux World Expo will be held in San Francisco, California from August 6-9. For pricing info, see the LinuxWorld Packages page.
