Not many events in this day in age bring the attention of the entire world to one common point as entire countries watch with bated breath as their most skilled representatives put themselves to the test. The Olympics have long been a source of great national pride as athletes from all across the world compete against one another for a chance to be recognized as one of the best athletes in the world. The 2008 Summer Olympics will be held in Beijing, China, and organizers anticipate over 10,500 athletes to participate in over 300 events. For the first time in the event’s history, China will be the host of the Summer Olympics, and although China’s actions threaten to sacrifice some of the mystique of the event, there is no doubting that the Summer Olympics is one of the most important sporting events in the world.

Every four years since 1896, the top athletes in the world have gathered together to compete in the Olympics. Those games have produced some great moments. Here are 20 of the best.

Jim Thorpe, 1912

Considered the greatest all round athlete in first half of the 20th century, Thorpe reportedly trained for the Olympics on the ship over. He went on to take the gold in the pentathlon and decathlon. Thorpe was also awarded two challenge prizes by King Gustav V of Sweden for the decathlon and Czar Nicholas II of Russia for the pentathlon.

Before Thorpe could walk away, Gustav grabbed his hand. “Sir,you are the greatest athlete in the world.” Replied Thorpe: “Thanks King.’”

Thorpe was later forced to return his medals for the crime of having been paid for playing baseball a couple of years earlier.

Among the super sport event spectaculars that occur throughout the year, The Open Championship, or just The Open, is one of the most important golf events and the oldest major golf championship event out of them all. Held on the weekend of the third Friday of July, the Open Championship is the only major held outside of the United States and the third major that takes place each year, following The Masters and the U.S. Open. Millions of dollars are at stake, and although The Open historically had the smallest prize fund out of all the majors, it has recently surged to the front. 2008 NBA Draft - June 26th

The 2008 NBA Draft will be held on June 26 and will be broadcast on ESPN in the United States. The NBA draft is how the NBA disperses new players into the league. Teams in the NBA pick in a specified order for two rounds. With 30 teams currently in the NBA, that means there will be 60 picks in the 2008 NBA Draft.

The order of the teams in the draft is decided by an interesting process. All 14 teams who didn’t make the NBA playoffs use a weighted lottery system to figure out the order of the first 14 picks of the draft. From pick 15 to pick 30, the picks are in order of the worst regular season record to the best regular season record. In the second round, the entire round is in order from the worst regular season record to the best regular season record.
