Al GoreOn Monday, former vice president Al Gore announced he’s joining Silicon Valley venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers as a partner.

As part of the company, Gore will have an opportunity to further his advocacy for environmental causes as he helps encourage and nurture green businesses.

Gore will focus his attention on new start-up businesses which are eco-friendly, primarily concentrating on those in the alternative energy sector. He will then advise Kleiner Perkins if they should take part in the financing of those companies.

As part of his announcement, Gore revealed that he will donate his salary from the venture to the Alliance for Climate Protection – a non-profit foundation.

Silcon Valley venture capital firms such as Kleiner Perkins are investing millions of dollars into alternative energy and other green startups. Kleiner Perkins feels that Gore will be able to help recognize which companies are worth investing in, thus giving Kleiner Perkins a leg up on the competition of other venture capitalists.

Gore is already very familiar with the Silicon Valley area, as he sits on the board of Apple and serves in an advisory capacity with Google.
